Introduction

Understanding the IVF process step by step can ease much of the anxiety that comes with starting fertility treatment. Hearing the words “you may need IVF” can bring a rush of emotions — hope, anxiety, confusion, and a hundred questions all at once.

What exactly happens during IVF? How long does it take? Will it hurt? Will it work?

At Aviram – The Birthplace, Coimbatore’s dedicated fertility and IVF centre, we believe that understanding your treatment is the first step toward feeling confident about it. As a specialized unit of KGM Hospital — widely regarded as one of the best multispecialty and trauma care hospitals in Coimbatore, with 25 years of trusted healthcare service — we combine advanced fertility science with the clinical depth and emergency-care backing of a full-fledged hospital. That means every IVF patient at Aviram has access to multispecialty medical support, not just a standalone fertility clinic.

Let’s walk through exactly what happens, step by step, when you begin IVF (In Vitro Fertilization).

What is IVF?

IVF is a fertility treatment where an egg and sperm are combined in a laboratory outside the body, and the resulting embryo is later transferred into the uterus. It is one of the most effective and widely trusted fertility treatments available today, helping couples facing a range of fertility challenges — from blocked fallopian tubes and low sperm count to unexplained infertility.

The IVF Process Step by Step

Step 1: Initial Consultation & Fertility Assessment

Your journey begins with a detailed consultation with our fertility specialists. This includes:

  • A thorough review of your medical and fertility history
  • Hormonal blood tests
  • Ultrasound scans to assess ovarian reserve
  • Semen analysis for male partners

This helps our team at Aviram design a treatment plan tailored specifically to your body and your needs — not a one-size-fits-all approach.

Step 2: Ovarian Stimulation

Instead of the one egg your body naturally releases each month, fertility medications are used to stimulate your ovaries to produce multiple mature eggs. This phase typically lasts 8–14 days, during which you’ll have regular monitoring through blood tests and ultrasounds to track follicle growth.

Step 3: Trigger Shot & Egg Retrieval

Once the follicles reach the right size, a “trigger injection” is given to help the eggs mature fully. About 36 hours later, the eggs are retrieved through a minor, minimally invasive procedure done under sedation — so you feel little to no discomfort.

Step 4: Sperm Collection & Fertilization

On the same day, a sperm sample is collected (or thawed, if previously frozen). Our embryology lab then fertilizes the eggs using one of two methods:

  • Conventional IVF – eggs and sperm are combined and left to fertilize naturally
  • ICSI (Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection) – a single healthy sperm is injected directly into an egg, often used for male-factor infertility

Because Aviram operates as a unit of KGM Hospital, our patients also benefit from access to advanced diagnostic labs and specialist consultations under one roof — a reassurance not every standalone fertility centre in Coimbatore can offer. Understanding this stage of the IVF process step by step helps patients feel more confident about what’s happening in the lab.

Step 5: Embryo Development & Culture

The fertilized eggs (now embryos) are carefully cultured in our lab for 3–5 days. Our embryologists monitor their growth daily, selecting the healthiest embryos for transfer.

Step 6: Embryo Transfer

A thin catheter is used to gently place the embryo into your uterus. This is a quick, painless procedure that doesn’t require anesthesia — many patients describe it as similar to a Pap smear.

Step 7: The Two-Week Wait & Pregnancy Test

This is often the most emotionally challenging part of the journey. About 10–14 days after transfer, a blood test (beta hCG) confirms whether implantation was successful.
